Review: A Stay at Courtyard by Marriott Penang
Traveling with family in these times has brought new concerns to the forefront – such as crowd density, sanitary conditions, and convenience. These were all factors we considered while traveling to a favorite destination like Penang.
During our first venture back post-pandemic, we chose the Courtyard by Marriott Penang hotel for our stay while visiting the children’s paternal grandma. Here’s our genuine take on the experience.

Prime Location:
In the current era, utilizing private transportation services like Grab has gained even more traction. Not only is it cost-effective, but it also saves the hassle of negotiating with local taxi drivers.
The Courtyard by Marriott Penang, located on Macalister Road (considered the city’s epicenter by many Grab drivers) and near renowned eateries, simplifies transit.
Because of its central position, Grab rides are speedy, typically arriving within 5 minutes of booking. This convenience is a boon, especially when we were keen to explore cafes, murals, or other sites.
Tip: Book your Grab ride when you’re at the hotel lobby to avoid waiting charges.
Impeccable Cleanliness:
Before diving into room details, it’s worth mentioning the hotel’s outstanding cleanliness standards. Despite being 80% full during our stay, the premises were pristine. Throughout, we noticed staff diligently sanitizing high-traffic areas.
Comfortable Rooms:
Our choice, the Family Escape Package, provided an adjoining twin-bed room to our primary King bedroom. This setup catered perfectly to our family of four, granting privacy and comfort. Each room was well-equipped with modern amenities, and we particularly appreciated the ample storage and intuitively designed bathroom.
Tip: Drop off luggage at the concierge before the official check-in time and enjoy some sightseeing. The hotel will notify you when your room is ready.
On-site Dining Experience:
Our package included breakfast and a “Kids Eat Free” promotion. While we initially thought we’d mostly dine out (given Penang’s reputation as a food hub), the in-house options were delightful. The Penang Kitchen, which focuses on local delicacies, offers a variety of options. Their high-tea spread is worth a mention, with its authentic representation of Penang’s Peranakan heritage.
Tip: Do consider dining in at the Penang Kitchen.
The Gin Library:
Located on the 23rd floor, this is Penang’s premiere distillery-themed bar. It became our little sanctuary to relax post day-trips. The cocktails, especially the gin concoctions, are expertly crafted.
Tip: Visit during the day for panoramic views of Penang, and by night, to admire the city’s illuminations.
Recreational Facilities:
The hotel boasts a picturesque pool and a well-equipped gym, both offering stunning views.
Tip: Head to the pool or gym during dawn or dusk to catch breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.

Having traveled extensively, we’re familiar with the Marriott Courtyard’s hallmark balance of familial warmth and luxury. Courtyard by Marriott Penang embodies this spirit beautifully. A special mention for the exemplary staff, including Fuad, Jivernesh, Balu, Yogaees, Alif, Yan, and Melody, who ensured our stay felt like a second home.
Taking kids on a journey amidst the pandemic can be daunting, but the standard upheld by your hotel – prioritizing guests, high-quality service, and stringent cleanliness – instilled confidence in our choice.
