Exploring Nagoya, Japan with Kids: An Adventure Guide

Having explored Japan extensively and having checked off the prime cities and major amusement parks, our recent adventure took us to Nagoya before setting off for Hokkaido.

Our adventure in Legoland Japan was a standout, offering brilliant activities.

Nagoya, a city beyond the usual tourist stops of Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, instantly captivated us. Despite being less frequented, Nagoya boasts world-class attractions like Legoland Nagoya and the Train Museum, perfect for families. Our visit to the flower park at Nabana-No-Sato, renowned for Japan’s most splendid Winter Illumination, was simply enchanting.

One unforgettable experience was stepping into the cockpit of a genuine Shinkansen.

Our 6-Day Winter Journey in Nagoya:

Our journey is broken down day-wise, detailing destinations, activities, modes of transport, and special notes.

    6D5N Nagoya Itinerary:

    • Day 0 to Day 6 includes various activities ranging from travel between Singapore, Haneda, Tokyo, and Nagoya to explorations of Nagoya’s highlights and a journey to Hokkaido.

Insights on Key Attractions and Accommodations:

    Nagoya JR Gate Tower Hotel:
An immaculate city hotel with a prime location atop the central train and bus hub, making transitions smooth. While room sizes can be cozy for a family of four, the convenience, abundance of eateries, and mesmerizing train views make up for it.

Legoland Japan and Sea Life Nagoya:
Proximity to each other, these two attractions alone make Nagoya a must-visit for families. From thrilling rides like Flying Ninjago to the unique Lego Submarine experience, there’s something for every adventurer.

    Shirakawago and Takayama:
An ethereal experience, especially during winter, these World Heritage Sites transport visitors back in time to the Edo era. Stepping into Shirakawago felt like walking into a historic Japanese painting. The adjacent Takayama is a less busy alternative to Kyoto, but equally captivating.

    SCMAGLEV and Railway Park Museum:
This museum stands out, featuring life-sized models of every Shinkansen throughout Japan’s history, alongside other notable historic trains. It’s a mesmerizing spot for anyone interested in the evolution and science of Japanese railways.

    Nabana-No-Sato Winter Illumination Park:
Dubbed as Japan’s best winter illumination spot, the park offers beautiful flower blooms and stunning light displays, making it a sight to behold during the evening.

    Bonus – Shibuya!
Before jetting off to Hokkaido, we took a detour to Tokyo, specifically to soak in the vibrant energy of Shibuya. We explored Harajuku’s shopping street, relished unique café experiences like the dog and hedgehog café, and had a memorable sushi experience at Genki Sushi.

As Japan reopens its gates, while many may gravitate towards the well-trodden paths, consider Nagoya for a wholesome, family-friendly, and less commercialized Japanese experience. For us, who’ve seen Japan in all its facets, Nagoya beckons, and we eagerly await our return.
