“Coach Iku is the best…she’s always there for me, making sure I get it right.”
With those earnest words from our 5-year-old Buddy during our last dinner in Niseko, it was clear what had left a lasting impression on him.
Seeking to expose our children to varied experiences, we chose the Niseko International Ski School (NISS) for their skiing initiation. Understanding that every child’s learning pace is unique, we hoped to provide Buddy, our younger and more cautious child, an equal shot at mastering this winter sport, just as he had previously conquered swimming and cycling. Skiing was the next challenge.
Discovering NISS, Hanazono:
NISS, located in Niseko, Hokkaido, is a renowned ski institution. We enrolled Buddy in their Tic-Tac Galaxy Programme (for ages 3-6), while his sister Dana joined the Yuki Galaxy Programme (for ages 7-14).
The NISS kids’ sessions, spanning from 10 am to 3 pm, are a blend of learning and fun, with meals and breaks included. The upcoming Galaxy of Kidz activity center, boasting climbing walls and other attractions, adds another reason for our return next season.
Gearing Up for the Slopes:
Before commencing lessons, we secured our ski equipment rentals a day prior from Niseko Sports. Online pre-booking streamlined the process, and their efficient staff ensured our gear was set and ready for the adventure.
Buddy’s Ski Odyssey:
Buddy’s prior ski exposures provided a foundational understanding, yet a refresher was necessary. The Tic-Tac Galaxy Programme, spread over four days, was our choice for his renewed ski journey.
The program’s structure encouraged camaraderie, allowing children to play and connect with their instructors before lessons began. Two instructors catered to a group of 8-10 kids, adjusting based on the children’s ski proficiency.
Buddy’s primary focus was mastering the basics. After acing the initial steps like putting on skis and maintaining balance, he moved on to advanced maneuvers like stopping mid-slope and skiing through arches. NISS’s high standards meant that children had to consistently showcase their skills before progressing.
While Buddy, being younger, faced certain challenges, particularly adjusting to different instructor styles, some instructors stood out with their patience and empathy. Despite certain disruptions and our occasional impatience, Buddy’s enthusiasm remained undeterred. His perseverance paid off by the fourth day, achieving most Level 1 skills. As a sweet finale, Buddy enjoyed a short ski down the Hanazono slopes with his father.
Final Thoughts:
NISS played a pivotal role in molding Buddy’s skiing foundation. Through the ups and downs, Buddy’s determination remained intact, never hinting at giving up. We’re eager to see the day Buddy and Dana ski side-by-side, conquering the slopes of Hanazono Niseko.
