Dynamic. Transformative. Diverse.
Singapore, an ever-changing global metropolis, continuously shapes itself, creating a cityscape that will look remarkably different for future generations. While the core values and traditions persist, the way they manifest themselves varies with each generation. A vivid testament to this is Singapore’s burgeoning street art.
We’ve previously acquainted ourselves with some of the city’s signature street murals, having personally met the talented artist, Yip Yew Chong, and admired his creations capturing nostalgic Singaporean scenes. You can revisit our previous explorations here:

The Authentic Experience:
This holiday, we decided to immerse our kids in the vibrant street art of the Haji Lane precinct. While photographs had given us a sneak peek, witnessing the art in person was unparalleled. The murals on Haji Lane are strikingly modern, vivid, and are every bit as enchanting as the ones we spotted in Penang. Naturally, we couldn’t resist capturing our kids against these fabulous backdrops, flaunting their festive outfits.
Essential Tips:
If these visuals intrigue you, here are some pointers for your own Haji Lane mural expedition:
- Location Insights: The murals we’re spotlighting are located near establishments like Blu Jaz, Piedra Negra, and Club Singapura on Haji Lane. For accessibility, approach via Beach Road, steer into Arab Street, and find parking close to the Beach Road junction. We also stumbled upon a delightful gelato store named ‘aRoma’, perfect for a post-art treat. For those with culinary inclinations, Blanco Court Coffee Shop at the beginning of Beach Road serves delightful Hokkien Prawn Noodle Soup.
- When to Visit? Opt for daylight to genuinely appreciate the murals. Mornings, preferably before 10 am, offer the best experience, given the afternoon hustle of Haji Lane that kicks in post-noon.
- Photo Tips:
- Stay Patient: You’re likely to encounter other art enthusiasts.
- Share the Space: Respect others and wait for your turn.
- Get Creative: Experiment with angles to find the perfect shot.
- Savour the Experience: With its mix of quirky shops and cafes, set aside 2-3 hours to soak in Haji Lane. Nearby Kampong Glam also beckons for a deeper cultural dive.
Practical Heads-Up:
Given Singapore’s unpredictable weather, be ready for sunny spells or sudden showers. Dress comfortably for walking, keep yourself hydrated, and carry essentials like a hat or umbrella. For those with toddlers, baby carriers might be more practical than strollers due to the lane’s narrowness.
