A Blend of Adventure and Unique Delights for All Ages.
Queenstown, often termed the ‘Adventure Capital of the World,’ is not just for those chasing adrenaline highs. Families, even with young children, have a plethora of options. Dive into our top 5 family activities in the delightful town of Queenstown.
- Shotover Jet Queenstown:
A thrilling boat ride that’s been a signature experience since 1965. David, our family member, first experienced it with his father over three decades ago. It offers high-speed spins and dashes through the scenic Shotover River and Valley, blending heart-racing excitement with breathtaking beauty. Tip: We recommend buying the ride videos – they make great keepsakes! - AJ Hackett Bungy NZ:
The birthplace of the iconic Bungy jump. Though we initially hadn’t planned it, David’s skydiving cancellation led us here. While Bungy is the star, the location also offers the Zip Ride – a 130m journey across a stunning river, at speeds of 60 km/h! Our family tried the Zip Ride amidst spectacular views, while our brave daughter took on the Bungy jump challenge! Tip: The venue is adaptable to various weather conditions. If you’re driving, the Kawarau bridge site is directly accessible for registration and activities. - Skyline Queenstown:
Our prior experience with the Skyline Luge in Sentosa made this a must. This family-friendly activity features TWO exhilarating 900-metre tracks, filled with twists and turns. The cherry on top? The chairlift post-luge, offering mesmerizing views of Queenstown’s Remarkable Alpine Range. Enjoy our ride footage here! - Coronet Peak and Lake Hayes Scenic Drive:
Hoping for picture-perfect family moments? Drive to Lake Hayes and Coronet Peak for postcard-ready backdrops. Coronet Peak, a popular ski destination, offers panoramic views year-round. Meanwhile, Lake Hayes offers tranquility and a chance to witness local life and natural splendor up close. Tip: Winter drivers, ensure your vehicle’s front wheels are equipped with snow chains for safety. You can rent them from car rental agencies. - Atley Road’s Unique Letterboxes:
On our return from Coronet Peak, we stumbled upon Atley Road near the Shotover River. The street is adorned with personalized mailboxes showcasing residents’ hobbies and interests. From a Beer Keg design to a lawn golf theme, it’s a whimsical sight! Check out our visit here!
Additional Tips for Your Queenstown Adventure:
- Book Ahead: Secure your spot and potentially snag discounts by booking activities in advance.
- Snow Chains: If visiting during winter, be prepared with snow chains and familiarize yourself with their installation.
- Parking: Space is limited in Queenstown. Opt for larger car parks outside the town center and be prepared for a short walk.
- ‘One Mile Car Park’: Search for this parking spot. It’s around 15 minutes from downtown and offers stunning lake views.
- ‘Middle Earth’ in Glenorchy: An hour’s drive from Queenstown, it’s a treat for ‘Lord of the Rings’ fans. Local tours can guide you to famous filming locations.
- Choose a Comfortable Stay: Consider centrally-located, family-friendly accommodations like the Holiday Inn Express Queenstown. Their facilities, including a self-service laundry, cater perfectly to self-driving families. We were particularly pleased with their service, especially when they packed a breakfast for our early departure.
